Russia Strikes Kyiv, Lviv and Other Cities; Zelenskyy Seeks Defense Help

Russia launched a massive, coordinated airborne attack against Ukraine, striking Kyiv, Lviv, and other major hubs like Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih on the morning of July 30 local time, according to reports from Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had issued an explicit public warning just hours prior, noting intelligence reports of an impending large-scale strike and urging citizens to seek shelter.

“It is important that our partners fully understand what is happening and that the protection of lives directly depends on their readiness, or lack thereof, to help us with air defense missiles,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian president made the appeal after returning from the United States, where he met with President Donald Trump.

In Kyiv, the Ukrainian Air Force and Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported multiple waves of ballistic missile impacts.  Fires broke out across several capital districts. At least one fatality has been confirmed by the Kyiv City Military Administration, with emergency crews deployed across affected zones.  

In Lviv, air defense alerts tracked multiple groups of cruise missiles traversing central Ukraine toward western regions, culminating in explosions across Lviv.  

Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed that residential buildings caught fire (specifically noting sites on Paton and Vyhovsky streets). Emergency services are actively conducting search-and-rescue operations over concerns that residents may be trapped under rubble.

The scale of the western barrage prompted neighboring Poland to scramble fighter jets and activate early-warning radar systems to safeguard its own airspace.

Information is still developing as rescue efforts continue overnight.

In neighboring Lublin, Poland, sirens rang out across the city tonight following reports that one or two Russian cruise missiles may have briefly crossed into Polish airspace during the barrage against western Ukraine.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces scrambled fighter jets alongside airborne early-warning (AWACS) radar aircraft. Ground-based air defense and radar installations across eastern Poland have been placed on maximum operational readiness.

Polish officials confirmed the threat warning was issued directly by Poland’s Government Security.

The incoming cruise missile vectors specifically targeted Lviv’s perimeter, with impacts and air defense interceptions reported in districts adjacent to the airport and transport corridors.

While Mayor Sadovyi and local officials are managing site assessments to confirm whether specific industrial, transport, or residential sites were hit, emergency search-and-rescue teams remain active across the city.

The situation along the Polish-Ukrainian border remains exceptionally tense overnight as military tracking continues.
