Trump Wants Zelenskyy to Stop Bombing Russia’s Fuel Supplies

After 1,663 days of the Russian war against Ukraine, President Donald J. Trump behaves as if nothing happened. As if Russia never invaded Ukraine, as if Ukrainian cities haven’t been bombed, as if Ukrainian civilians haven’t been killed or maimed.

There is no war in Eastern Europe.

And why wonder? Trump has never cared about the war. He has never cared enough to learn why Russia invaded Ukraine and why Ukrainians are fighting and defending their people and land.

Furthermore, he never wondered why Ukrainian allies are supporting Ukraine, not Russia.

And then he utters this latest choice of typical Trumpian stupidity.

On the sidelines of the Irish Open, Trump made the following statement to reporters on the sidelines. Speaking about the war and global energy markets, Trump explicitly told reporters:

“Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. Let him go after targets, but not diesel fuel, because he's causing a major fuel shortage.”

He went on to argue that Ukraine has “plenty of other targets” to hit besides Russian refining and energy infrastructure. 

Ukraine has selected this target in order to hasten an end to the war. Trump seems not to care about that as well. It seems as if he would rather see the war go on and on as the body count increases.

Kyiv’s Core Strategy: Long-range strikes against Russian oil refineries, fuel depots, and export terminals have been one of Ukraine’s most effective asymmetric tactics. The goal is two-fold: directly starve the Russian war machine of refined military fuel and severely cut off the energy revenues bankrolling the Kremlin’s war budget.

Washington’s Energy Friction: The White House’s pushback highlights the ongoing, sharp disagreement over deep-strike policy. The administration's concern centers on global energy price volatility, secondary inflation, and global supply chains—especially given how tight global diesel markets remain.

The Irony of Timing: Telling Kyiv to pull back on energy strikes on the exact same weekend Russia launches a massive, targeted strike wave against border crossings, rail transport, and Western-backed logistics corridors puts the strategic paradox front and center. Kyiv is being asked to show restraint on the enemy's economic lifelines while absorbing direct hits on its own trade arteries.
