Trump Waives Sanctions and Shocks World; Killings in Ukraine Continue
Much to the shock, chagrin and anger of Ukrainians and its allies, President Donald Trump has sided with Russia and signed an executive order waiving key US sanction packages targeting Russia’s energy and defense sectors—specifically blocking elements of the Lindsey Graham Act, which targeted Russian energy revenues, Russian banks, and the "shadow fleet" of oil tankers. The Diesel Deal: The waiver was linked to a broader transaction under which Russia would supply diesel in exchange for US sanctions relief.
“Financial Rewards" for Putin: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that blocking these measures amounts to an "American sanctions blackout" and acts as "financial rewards for Putin." He argued that easing pressure right as Russia ramps up seasonal winter strikes on Ukraine's power grid—attempting to cause a blackout ahead of winter—does not stop the war, but rather "gives Putin every reason to prolong it endlessly."
Fears of Further Relief: Zelenskyy expressed concern on social media that this diesel deal and waiver were "not the end of it," warning that continued rollbacks of sanctions would only fuel Kremlin confidence.
Tribute to Lindsey Graham: Zelenskyy invoked the memory of the late Senator Lindsey Graham (the primary sponsor of the sanctions bill), noting that Graham worked tirelessly to push maximum assistance and pressure against the aggressor, and that dismantling his namesake act undermines that legacy.
At the EU summit, European Council President António Costa and other leaders reaffirmed that "now is not the time to relieve Russia's sanctions" and pledged continued support.
Bipartisan Backlash in Washington: The move has drawn strong criticism from US lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with Republican Sen. John Cornyn stating "Lindsey would be appalled," and Democrats urging action in Congress to reverse the waiver.
As for the frontline operations and tactical developments in the war, the Pokrovsk Sector witnessed heavy assaults: The Ukrainian 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade reported repelling the largest Russian motorcycle-mounted mechanized assault of 2026 in the Pokrovsk sector. Russian forces attempted to utilize fog and poor visibility to advance, but Ukrainian units coordinated artillery and drone strikes to halt the attack.
Ukraine's General Staff confirmed targeted long-range strikes against Russian drone manufacturing facilities (including the "Roboavia" facility) and critical logistics hubs behind enemy lines.
The General Staff formally rejected claims by Russian commanders regarding alleged deep advances toward Kramatorsk and the capture of Dobropillia, emphasizing that positions along those axes remain held.
Sanctions & Political Pressure: President Zelenskyy addressed media inquiries regarding shifting diplomatic dynamics in Washington, expressing concern over potential further easing of sanctions against Russia following recent preliminary agreements.
Ukrainian officials highlighted technical restrictions currently impacting Starlink satellite terminals during high-speed operational maneuvers, which has presented challenges for interceptor drone connectivity. Targeting of Urban Centers: Shelling and drone strikes were reported across eastern and southern regional hubs, including Zaporizhzhia.
Weather & Regional Conditions: Severe, dense autumn fog swept across central regions—including Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad oblasts—slowing movement and creating challenging operating conditions along transportation corridors.
Reported Casualties & Fatalities were also reported. Kherson Region: Russian forces dropped guided aerial bombs (GABs) and launched heavy shelling against residential areas in Kherson. Regional authorities and prosecutors confirmed at least 1 civilian killed and 40 others injured (including three children).
Overnight Energy Wave Strikes: During the massive overnight barrage of over 320 drones and missiles directed at energy facilities across 22 locations, local emergency services reported civilian casualties across multiple oblasts, including fatalities in central and southern regions.
Ukrainian military also discovered the execution of Ukrainian POWs in the Zaporizhzhia Sector: Ukrainian military authorities learned that Russian forces (identified as belonging to the 38th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade) executed Ukrainian prisoners of war.
According to officials, this is a new incident. Operational Group "South" released details of the execution, which occurred recently along the Huliaipole sector in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Evidence & Radio Intercepts: Ukrainian forces captured the crime on drone footage hovering above the scene and intercepted internal Russian radio comms.
The audio recordings revealed explicit commands from Russian commanders instructing troops on the ground to "finish off that one—the '300'" (referring to a wounded soldier) and "liquidate him immediately.”
Perpetrators Identified: Ukrainian military officials named personnel from Russia’s 38th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade as those involved, alleging that these execution orders stem directly from brigade commander Colonel Valery Kazak.
The footage, radio logs, and preliminary findings have been formally transferred to the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Prosecutor's Office to open a war crimes investigation.
The Russian war against Ukraine, the killings and destruction will continue as long as Donald Trump sides with Russia and Putin. Russian aggression must be terminated, Russia must be subdued and expelled from Ukraine for the good of the world.
